The UWI, Mona Signs Housing Contract Projected to Save J$100 million Annually

As a strategic initiative to generate revenue for the campus, The University of the West Indies, Mona, hosted the official contract signing ceremony for the College Common Housing Project on Monday, April 8, 2024. The project, aimed at generating J$100 million annually in savings will see the campus renovating 44 housing units to host its faculty and staff. The first phase of the project valued at J$78 million, demonstrates the university’s strong commitment to enhancing accommodations and campus infrastructure for its faculty and staff.  This first phase will result in the renovation of 17 units between April and June, 2024, while the second phase encompassing the remaining 27 units is scheduled to run from July to December this year.

During the signing event, Mr. Milton Dennis, Acting Estate Manager for The UWI, Mona, provided an overview of the initiative, stating, "This development signifies the campus' dedication to addressing the housing needs of our staff members." Dennis' comments underscore The University's commitment to prioritising the well-being and satisfaction of valued staff members.

In delivering special remarks, Professor Densil A. Williams, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI, Mona expressed his satisfaction with the launch of project, stating, "This project is geared towards restoring the ‘familiness’ in our community. I'm very pleased that we wasted no time in executing on it at this time. I am encouraging the contractors to ensure that they carry out their work with the highest levels of efficiency and accountability. I want the project to be completed on time and on budget. This will set the standard for future infrastructure projects at The UWI, Mona. "

The College Common Project will include roof and ceiling restoration, bathroom fixture upgrades, tiling, electrical work, and kitchen makeovers among other repairs. Through comprehensive renovation and repairs, the project aims to establish a healthy, safe, and visually appealing living environment for faculty and staff.
