Five students of the UWI Mona Campus were among Team Jamaica (Men) that qualified for the 2024 Hockey5s World Cup in Muscat, Oman. Director of the Business Development Office, Adjunct Lecturer, MSc. Sports Business Management (UWI), Mona Academy of Sports, and President of the Jamaica Hockey Federation (JHF), Fabian Stewart, was elated at the team’s historic performance and is looking forward to improved preparation and support for the upcoming World Cup.
The Jamaican Men’s team qualified via the recently concluded Pan American Hockey5s World Cup Qualifiers for men and women, hosted by the JHF at the Mona Hockey Field, Kingston, Jamaica, June 4 – 11, 2023. The tournament brought together the region’s best teams, with over 300 players, officials, and supporters from 14 countries competing for respective places in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey5s World Cup.
At the end of eight exciting days of competition, the Jamaica Men’s Team secured third place and a qualifying spot for the World Cup, while the women placed fifth (5th). Among the successful team members were UWI students Christopher Reid, Shemar Gordon, Rasheed Johnston, Kevon Reid, and Gian Paul Haughton.
President of the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) Alberto ‘Coco’ Budeisky congratulated the Jamaica Hockey Federation on a well-run and successful staging of the World Cup Qualifiers and presented Fabian Stewart with a plaque to mark the outstanding effort of the JHF.
On noting the successful staging of a third international tournament by the JHF, Stewart acknowledged the support of the UWI Mona indicating that “The UWI is working to become a center of excellence for elite sports athletes. The JHF has encouraged and aided in recruiting student-athletes to the UWI to advance their academic and professional careers. The partnership between the UWI Mona Academy of Sport and the JHF has produced a dynamic program that facilitates international-level training for the members of the World Cup Squad while pursuing their education at the institution.”
