The region's 8th Global Reggae Conference (#GRC2024) hosted by the Institute of Caribbean Studies and the Reggae Studies Unit at The University of the West Indies kicked off on Wednesday, February 14. Over its four-day staging, the #GRC2024 will feature a compact schedule of panels, spotlight sessions, special presentations, film screenings, and cultural activities under the theme "A Century of Sound: Technology, Culture and Performance."

The American Association of Geographers (AAG)

The American Association of Geographers (AAG) has announced its first-ever cohort of the new “Elevate the Discipline” programme, which will train and showcase geographers in action—in the media, as voices for public policies, and in advocating for change—on this year’s theme of Climate and Society.

The selected participants drawn from across 11 US states and the West Indies represent the rich and diverse range of practice within the discipline, including hydroclimatology, political ecology, climate and health, disaster geography, geoinformatics, soil science, and more.

UWI Researchers cop US $300,000 to study nature-based coastal solutions

Researchers at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) are pleased to have secured US $300,000 to conduct much needed research into designing sustainable, nature-based coastal solutions. The grant by Future Earth will fund research in Trinidad & Tobago, USA, Barbados and Jamaica aimed at generating a more universal approach to the design specification of nature-based solutions, making them more widely applicable.

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution to designate February 17 annually as Global Tourism Resilience Day. The resolution was initiated by Professor Lloyd Waller from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) who also serves as Executive Director of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC), which is hosted at The UWI Mona Campus.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will be co-hosting the Commonwealth Science Conference (CSC) (Caribbean edition) with The Royal Society from February 7-9, 2023. The closed conference will be hosted at The Jamaica Pegasus under the theme of ‘Science for a resilient future’.
 
The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of some of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine.

Dr. Peter Nelson cops SRC Young Scientist/Technologist Award 2022

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Dr. Peter Nelson copped the coveted SRC Young Scientist/Technologist Award for 2022.

The Award was presented at the Scientific Research Council's National Inventions Awards and Science Medal Luncheon in November 2022, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on the heels of the 7th Biennial Science and Technology Conference held under the theme, 'Harnessing the Power of Research and Innovation to Drive Economic Resilience'.
