The management of The UWI Mona Campus is continuing to closely monitor Hurricane Beryl and the possibility of it impacting Jamaica later this week. The Government of Jamaica has now issued a Hurricane Watch for the island. Decisions will be taken on the continued operations of the Campus and the Halls of Residence based on updates from official sources.

The management of The UWI Mona Campus is closely monitoring the development of Hurricane Beryl, its rapid intensification, and the possibility of it impacting Jamaica later this week. The Campus has activated its emergency preparations.

Please be advised that the University remains open for business and we will continue to be guided by the national updates and instructions of the Office of the Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM). We will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates tomorrow and until Beryl is no longer a threat.

The University of the West Indies Earthquake Unit has confirmed that the island experienced a 5.6 magnitude earthquake at 10:57am, the epicenter was located 10 km south of Buff Bay, Portland.

In order to ensure the structural integrity of all buildings on the Mona Campus, The Management of the Campus has suspended operations for the rest of the day - October 30, 2023.

The Community is advised to monitor Mona Messaging, the media and their immediate supervisors, and Faculty Offices for further updates.

In light of the Government of Jamaica’s announcement to resume face-to-face modality across the education sector, The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus, will begin offering current and incoming students of The UWI, Mona Campus, face-to-face classes in the 2022-2023 Academic Year.

The University of the West Indies Mona Campus wishes to advise all students and members of the public that Friday, September 17, 2021 is a full business day as  such the Mona Campus will be opened for face – to – face business in keeping with the announcement made by the Government of Jamaica on Wednesday, September 15, 2021.
Members of the UWI community are being asked to continue to check their University emails and information from the Government of Jamaica for updates regarding the new island-wide arrangements.
